California Restricted License After DUI

How to keep driving legally during your suspension — IID vs standard restricted license

Types of Restricted Licenses

After a DUI suspension in California, you don't necessarily have to stop driving entirely. There are multiple pathways to legally drive while your full license is suspended.

🔧 IID Restricted License

Best option — drive anywhere, anytime

  • ✅ Unrestricted driving with IID installed
  • ✅ Available immediately (no waiting period for 1st offense)
  • ✅ Drive to any location for any purpose
  • ✅ Available for all offense levels
  • ⚠️ Requires IID in every vehicle you drive

🚗 Standard Restricted License

Limited — work and DUI class only

  • ✅ No IID device required
  • ❌ 30-day hard suspension first (1st offense)
  • ❌ Work, DUI program, and medical appointments ONLY
  • ❌ Not available for 2nd+ offenses without long wait
  • ❌ Specific routes — no detours

How to Apply for an IID Restricted License

1

File SR-22 Insurance

Have your insurance company file the SR-22 electronically with the DMV. This usually takes 24-48 hours.

2

Enroll in DUI Program

Enroll in the court-ordered DUI program and get your enrollment verification letter.

3

Install IID

Get an IID installed at a state-approved provider. Obtain the installation certificate (Form DL920).

4

Pay Reinstatement Fee

Pay the $125 DMV reinstatement fee.

5

Visit the DMV

Bring all documents (SR-22 proof, DUI enrollment letter, IID certificate, fee receipt) to your local DMV office.

6

Receive Restricted License

The DMV issues your IID-restricted license. Your driving record will show a "Z" restriction (IID required).

Driving Rules & Limitations

IID Restricted License

  • Drive anywhere in California for any purpose — no route restrictions
  • Must blow into the IID before starting and during rolling retests
  • Cannot drive any vehicle without an IID installed
  • Must keep all calibration appointments (every 60 days)
  • Any IID violation can extend your restriction period

Standard Restricted License

  • Drive to and from work ONLY — no stops along the way
  • Drive to and from DUI program classes
  • Drive to essential medical appointments
  • Must carry proof of work schedule and DUI program schedule at all times
  • Driving outside approved routes = driving on a suspended license (misdemeanor)

⚠️ Violation Warning

Driving outside the terms of your restricted license is treated as driving on a suspended license — a misdemeanor that can result in additional suspension, fines, and even jail time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a rideshare or rental car with an IID restriction?

No. With an IID restriction, you can ONLY drive vehicles equipped with an IID. Rideshare driving (Uber/Lyft) is not permitted. Rental cars do not have IIDs. You can ride as a passenger in any vehicle.

Can I drive for work if my job requires driving?

With an IID license, yes — your employer's vehicle must also have an IID installed (with employer authorization). With a standard restricted license, you can only commute to your workplace, not drive for work duties.

What if I'm pulled over — how do I prove my restricted license?

Carry your restricted license, SR-22 proof, DUI program enrollment letter, and work schedule. If you have an IID license, the "Z" restriction on your license is sufficient.

Can I drive out of state with a restricted license?

Technically your California restricted license is valid in other states under the interstate driver's compact. However, each state has its own rules about recognizing IID restrictions. Check before traveling.
